Most people don’t realize how big of a role APIs play in day-to-day interactions. Are you checking that handy weather app to see if you need to break out the winter boots or can push through another week of wearing flip-flops? APIs are behind that. Are you searching on Yelp to find a dining spot for your best friend’s birthday celebration? APIs are behind that, too.
In honor of the heavy lifting APIs do behind the scenes and the fact that Thanksgiving is right around the corner, we’d like to highlight some of the ways APIs can assist with prep and planning for the perfect Thanksgiving dinner party with family and friends.
Wednesday, November 25 (Thanksgiving Eve)
8:10 p.m. – After a long day at the office all you want to do is take your shoes off and sit down on the couch and enjoy the fall TV shows. But suddenly you realize you haven’t bought a thing for tomorrow’s celebration. No turkey, no gravy and no stuffing. And you can’t have Thanksgiving without these. Luckily, you’ve got just the right apps to assist with the planning process.
8:12 p.m. – You manage to find the perfect recipe app that gives detailed step-by-step instructions on how to prepare and cook all your favorite Thanksgiving dishes. Now it’s time to find a store open late enough to grab the ingredients…
8:20 p.m. – You hop into your connected car that automatically syncs with your mobile devices and begins directing you to the nearest grocery store. Don’t have a car? No worries, there’s an app for that (Uber, Lyft or the like) that will pick you up and get you to the store ASAP.
8:45 p.m. – Before heading to the register you might want to take a quick look at your bank account. With a few clicks here and there on your mobile banking app you’re able to securely transfer just enough into your checking account, just in time for check out and to buy your Thanksgiving goodies!
9:15 p.m. – You’re finally back home and are able to begin prepping (but first, you need to prepare yourself for tomorrow’s Turkey Trot mini-marathon).
Thursday, November 26
7:15 a.m. – Before beginning the Turkey Trot you’ve made sure your fitness band is fully charged and ready to track your time and steps till the finish line. Again: APIs.
9:03 a.m. – After the race you’ve fully synced your fitness band to your mobile app where you just received another fitness badge! (Does this mean you can eat even more turkey now that you’ve got your work out in?)
10:00 a.m. – It’s time to blast music in the kitchen with a few different music applications: Spotify and Pandora are just a few apps that can help time slaving away at the stove a little more bearable. Or maybe you’re not feeling the music and instead you’re counting down the minutes and religiously checking the NFL app in preparation to watch your beloved team score that winning touchdown.
6:30 p.m. – After a few long hours of prepping and reviewing multiple recipes on your mobile phone and keeping up to date with the NFL sports app, it’s time to sit down and enjoy that long-awaited turkey and stuffing.
Thank goodness for technology and today’s APIs, right?! Without them you simply wouldn’t have had the data on tap to pull off the best Thanksgiving dinner ever.
